Rituals
On the day preceding Krishna Janmashtami, followers usually practice a single-meal fast. The fasting officially commences after the morning ceremonies on Janmashtami, with a formal declaration of intention (Sankalpa) to signify the start of the fast. The traditional fasting period is believed to end with the eighth lunar day, known as Ashtami Tithi, and the star constellation named Rohini Nakshatra. Some followers opt to break their fast on one of the two days. Nishita Kaal, or midnight according to the Vedic calendar, is considered the most auspicious time for Krishna Puja.
History
Shri Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev but was raised by Yashoda and Nanda in Vrindavan. The festival typically occurs on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapad. Legend has it that Lord Krishna was born in Mathura Prison, where his life was threatened by his maternal uncle, Kansa. Kansa, a tyrant, was warned by a celestial voice that one of Devaki’s children would be his downfall. To prevent this, Kansa planned to kill Devaki, but Vasudeva, her husband, pleaded for her life and promised to hand over any newborn to Kansa. Convinced by Vasudeva’s assurance, Kansa released Devaki but kept both her and Vasudeva imprisoned. Kansa ensured that none of their children survived. To safeguard Lord Krishna, Vasudeva carried him across the River Yamuna to Vrindavan in a basket, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda.
